Director (South Africa)
Director of numerous reality shows including recently in Nigeria and Congo, as well as documentaries and broadcast shows including as cocreator of the 2 x SAFTA Award winning music programme “Jam Sandwich”.
An American by birth, Michael began as a script reader for Castle Rock Pictures before moving to Prague, where he co-founded the groundbreaking international literary magazine TRAFIKA and learned the basics of television and film work.
He first came to South Africa in 1998 and became a permanent resident in 2003. He is the recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship, a Chashama Residency, and an Individual Artist Grant from the NY State Council on the Arts.
He has taught documentary at AFDA, editing at WITS, camera at NEMISA, and is currently the Head of the Screen Arts Division of ASE.
He was a founding board member of the Documentary Filmmakers Association, has served several years on the Executive Committee of the South African Screen Federation (SASFED), and is a member of the South African Writers’ and Editors’Guilds (WGSA and SAGE).
