Writer, director, producer (South Africa)

Sylvia Vollenhoven is an award winning South African journalist, filmmaker and writer.

Her work as a foreign correspondent during the apartheid years focused on exposing the human rights abuses inherent in the apartheid system, for an international audience.

She was co producer (for the SABC) for the BBC two-part series Mandela: A Living Legend. Her book The Keeper of the Kumm has been shortlisted for the inaugural City Press Tafelberg non-fiction book award.

Tafelberg will publish this work to coincide with two decades of South African democracy in 2014.

The Kumm project is a rare multimedia innovation that is producing a book, a documentary film, a musical theatre piece (at the same time as the book launch) and a feature film. She is the founder of the VIA – Vision In Africa media company which has recently been commissioned to produce a series of one-hour biographies for SABC 3.
